161. Morland Road, Hayfield, High Peak Just a short walk up from the A6015 New Mills Road can be seen a Thorn Alpha 1 90 Watt SOX lantern attached to a Thorn QC 3 'Sheerline' hexagonal 5 m aluminium column. As you may expect from this unusual combination (the 90 Watt SOX version of the Alpha 1 being more suited to a lighting column of around 8 m in height), the installation is privately-owned; perhaps by a nearby pub, as land immediately behind the installation is used as the pub's car park.

This is one of the later (1980s') versions of the Alpha 1, as evidenced by the grub screws used in securing it to the bracket being relocated to a lower portion of the rear shoe, compared with earlier versions.

The lantern's acrylic 'Opticell' unit is heavily soiled as a result of it providing a convenient perch for birds over the years.

The other side of the Opticell is damaged, allowing dirt to enter the normally-sealed lamp area. Despite the grime, an intact lamp can be seen; therefore, the lantern may still be operational.
