4q. Cardinal Square, Off Nottingham Road, Derby City Centre. Installed in the car parks of this 1970s' office block are several mid-hinged 8 m columns supporting triple-arm brackets and ELECO GR 304 lanterns, which, in 2015, all still run MBF lamps - either 250 Watt or 400 Watt. The lanterns are well-maintained too; they still emit the familiar cool white glow of a healthy mercury lamp, with hardly any green colour shifting ever occurring. Of course, this may change as stocks of spare lamps are depleted, owing to the obsolescence of mercury vapour lamps in the same year. The lanterns have their individual lamp control gear sets installed remotely - the column bases must, therefore, be rather cramped!
Three columns are installed in the car park on the front of the site - two are visible here; the third (in the background) is obscured by adjacent trees.
Notice the diffusing spots that are applied to the lantern bowls.
The lanterns attached to the second column are positioned identically to those on the first column.
Nothing had changed by 2018, with the lanterns continuing to run MBF lamps.
Whilst many of the lanterns were dayburning when encountered on this occasion, two were not operating at all. This may not be through a fault, however, as all lanterns were operational when viewed at about the same time a few weeks earlier, and none looked to have worn lamps then.
By December 2022, the lanterns were no more - LED post-top lanterns had replaced them.
