10. (Probably from a) GEC Z9539. Someone clearly has a grudge against this type of lantern!

Spotted on Thursday, 20th July 2007 in some woodland off Wilson Close in Mickleover.

What I think happened: The existing privately owned 5 m concrete columns along here were removed in 2002/3 in preparation for the road to be adopted. The lanterns at the time were Z9539s although they hadn't worked for many years following the control lantern being damaged. Whilst walking through the woodland on the above date, I came across a lampholder in the grass. I followed the wires leading from the lampholder to what I first thought was a brick but then realised it was a GEC leak transformer - similar to the one in my own Z9539. The transformer was in a bad way - it almost looked as if it had been thrown on a bonfire as the casing was damaged to such an extent that the internal coil was visible. I could not find any other parts of the lantern (gear tray, canopy etc) so quite why it is there is something of a mystery.

Pictures:

The ballast from above. Not much left!

What appears to be a gaping hole in the side of the ballast is actually the coil - it still shouldn't be visible though!

The back appears to have gone completely - notice the lack of fixing holes.
