The following photographs were taken on Thursday, 28th April 2011.

The outgoing lanterns here consisted of various Thorn Beta 5 35 Watt SOX lanterns; attached to ELECO 'Silverline' HW-1226 aluminium columns. These columns were very rare in Derby; in fact, Belper Road was, to my knowledge, the only road in the City that utilised such columns.

A couple of the columns were installed in the mouths of junctions. Unsurprisingly, the replacement columns are installed away from junctions.

The replacement columns, incidentally, are 9 m in height - the difference in heights between new and old could potentially give rise to complaints from residents.

This very angular bracket supported a top-entry Beta 5. I suspect that the up-tilt of this bracket caused the lamp to be positioned at an angle greater than the permitted maximum twenty degrees above the horizontal, which SOX lamps operated cap-down, require. When new, the columns would have supported side-entry Group 'B' mercury lanterns.

The 'medium' (SGS 253) version of the Iridium has been used as the replacement lantern. These are fitted with 100 Watt-150 Watt SON-T lamps.

The contrasting heights between the old and new columns are clearly demonstrated below:

A side-entry Beta 5 from the early-mid 1980s was installed on this outgoing column. It is unknown as to whether this lantern was an early replacement for a failed top-entry Beta 5, or whether it was a direct replacement for the original MBF lantern.

Nearby was another side-entry installation; again, the column was situated in a junction mouth. The installation's bracket was orientated at a slightly peculiar angle, although it may have faced Belper Road originally - the presence of a tape repair at its column joint suggested that it had been re-aligned at some point.

The lantern had been fitted with a blue Royce Thompson SC1000 photocell; the type used on the PFI from its commencement until September 2010.

Some of the installations were surrounded by safety barriers at the time of photographing - the services to the new columns were being installed, and the old columns were being disconnected in preparation for their removal.

This very clean Beta 5 would never illuminate Belper Road again.

Now, it was the Iridium's turn.

The decommissioned column had had its inspection door removed and discarded to one side. This column served as an isolation point for other columns; a single-pole fuse carrier can be seen in the base, and this would have protected the outgoing circuit while the column was still in use. The door appears complete in the photograph; however...

...it had actually been smashed just less than half way along its length. Presumably, whoever removed the door didn't have the correct key; thus, resorted to using a "universal" key (i.e. a hammer) to gain access to the base. The force of the impact had caused the paint to flake off, revealing the original aluminium finish underneath.

The reverse side of the door remained unpainted. A slight amount of corrosion had appeared at the top (left in the picture below) of the door, from where moisture would have entered the column base over the years.

The road curved back towards Duffield Road after this.

The next installation saw a return to top-entry Beta 5s. This column's door was still in place, although, it was not original to this column; being a curved British Steel type.

The outgoing column here was barely visible behind its replacement.
