One particular Thorn Gamma 6 on this network of footpaths is fitted with a half blacked-out bowl. I am not sure whether this is an in-service modification, or whether this type of bowl was available from Thorn. The design of the Gamma 6 is not particularly suited to narrow footpaths, as the majority of the light output ends up being cast into neighbouring gardens and windows. This has obviously caused discomfort for the resident whose property stands adjacent this column, and so the blacked-out bowl has been fitted in order to try to reduce light trespass entering through the windows. (This resident is particularly unlucky, as another column (both outgoing and new) stands right outside the front of their property as well! However, the outgoing lantern here is a Philips XGS 103, albeit with the front of the bowl (facing the property) sprayed black!) Occasionally, after being repaired, the Gamma 6's bowl would become slightly out of line, causing the light to shine once again through the windows - this was always quickly rectified!
