The following photographs were taken on Sunday, 11th March 2012.

A Revo 'Moseley' cast iron column supporting a CU Phosco P109 post-top lantern was located the parking area adjacent the Old Lane junction. The P109 lanterns are original to the initial 'heritage' scheme that occurred here in the 1970s - the columns all having been used elsewhere in the City before being refurbished and (re)installed in the narrow streets of Darley Abbey village. It is believed that the P109s ran 80 Watt MBF lamps when new, but were later converted to run 70 Watt SON-E lamps.

A Revo 'Hull' column supporting a DW Windsor 'Warwick' was next.

The replacement lanterns specified for this part of Darley Abbey are made by SUGG, to their 'Camberwell' design. All are fitted with a Philips 70 Watt CDO-ET lamp. Some of the outgoing lanterns also ended their days running the same.

The replacement columns were cast at a foundry in Huddersfield especially for this scheme. They replicate the a style of column that still exists in the grounds of the nearby St Matthew's Church - this was made by a Derby-based foundry in 1865. The lantern fitted to this column is very similar in appearance to the Camberwell, and could be an earlier version of the design.

The P109 fitted to this column was one of the few that still retained its central copper finial - this screws onto a threaded rod that protrudes from the top of the canopy and ensures that the canopy will not accidentally work loose. Unfortunately, the lampholder had worked loose from its internal fixing plate; this caused the lamp to hang below the lantern's glass refractor ring...not that the refractor would have been particularly effective, given the state of the lantern's bowl!

Another column supporting a Warwick then followed - this was by far the cleanest bowl of all the Warwick lanterns in the area; the installation's position causing it to never be in direct sunlight due to the proximity of tall surrounding buildings.

The column's original brass door securing bolt had long since disappeared; the door had been drilled, the hole threaded and a small grub screw fitted in order to hold the door closed.

Another Moseley, this time supporting a Phosco P111, existed opposite the Abbey Public House. The replacement column was situated a few metres away from this installation in order to move it away from nearby trees.

No optical control was provided in the P111, although it may have had a refractor when new. By comparison, a polished aluminium reflector surrounds the lamp in the new lanterns.

The road ended with another P111 (this time, one with a translucent bowl) - this example was used as a replacement for my own P109 in March 2007. The vintage cast iron sign warning of the penalties associated with throwing stones was still in place neaby!

It can just be glimpsed that a two-part photocell detector is fitted to the P111's canopy - this is unusual; most of the lanterns in this area were still reliant on mechanical solar time switches for their operation even by the time that they were due to be removed. The new lanterns are switched by miniature photocells fitted to one of the four panels above the glazed section.

One new column had been installed on the short road leading to a public car park.

There were already two Warwick-topped columns in the car park itself.

I had previously photographed the second installation in May 2004; little did I realise that eight years later (is it really that long?), I would be repeating this action!
