The following photographs were taken on Sunday, 26th September 2010; long after the PFI replacement scheme along here had been completed.
Two 5 m mid-hinged columns were installed beneath the A38 bridge. Columns of this height are rare on the PFI, though they are a necessity here due to the limited height clearance available.
The CPO-TW lamps looked tiny in the large optics of these Iridiums.
Evidence of the previous lighting scheme still remained, however. Prior to the relighting scheme, the carriageway beneath the bridge had been illuminated by two Thorn Beta 2 55 Watt SOX lanterns that were fitted to wall brackets (the records above suggest that 35 Watt SOX lanterns of some repute were fitted prior to 1997). Rather than remove the brackets in their entirety, the outreaches were cut, and the wall fixing plates were left, creating a reminder of the previous lighting scheme. Interestingly, the brackets were both positioned at roughly the same mounting height - the seemingly horizontal trenches in the concrete clearly aren't!
In the left-hand picture, the sprayed-on stencil maintenance number (55297) is still visible; in the right-hand picture, the reinstated footway that was the location of the feeder pillar for the light above can be seen.
Looking across the road, the other new column keeps watch.
