Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract
Kedleston Road, Allestree - Part Two
After the Allestree Lane junction, the 10 m columns supporting 135 Watt SOX lanterns (seen on the previous page) were reduced to 8 m columns running 90 Watt SOX lanterns. Following the commencement of the PFI, this difference was removed, as all of the replacement columns were 10 m in height.
The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 2nd October 2010.
Most of the lanterns on this section of road were Thorn Alpha 1s, and the first lantern pictured was no exception:
A close-up of the Alpha 1 reveals that the Opticell unit was in absolutely mint condition for its age.
A new column was positioned alongside the outgoing column adjacent the Lambley Drive junction.
This Alpha 1's Opticell showed slight signs of ingress, but was otherwise in good condition.
Sadly, the same could not be said about the following installation - the Opticell has split open, allowing heavy dirt ingress.
A cable tie had been wrapped around the Opticell in a vain attempt to hold it together.
The next column had been replaced at some point; a Thorn Alpha 4 was fitted.
The Alpha 4's bracket did not appear to have been painted. The replacement Iridium was installed just out of some silver birch tree branches - a close call!
The Iridium located opposite Ypres Road was literally "looking down" on the Alpha 1.
The next Alpha 1 was dayburning. Given that the column was set to be removed before too long, the fault will probably not be rectified.
This lantern's Opticell was also quite badly soiled internally.
A new column was installed opposite Quarndon Heights.
The SGS 254 lanterns comprise a curved glass bowl.
A very rusty column was set to be removed from the mouth of the junction.
The 'classic' setup for Derby's Alpha 1 lanterns: a horizontal bracket with photocell located on the outside of the right angle that is formed between the bracket and the column shaft.
The Opticell fitted to this Alpha 1 was also in good condition.
