Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract

Orchard Street, Mickleover

The equipment being removed consisted of the following items in 1997:

Seq. No. Lamp Number Location Lamp Type Watt Isolation Point
1 36466 OS NOS 1/2?? SXPL3 35
2 36467 OS NO 3 SXPL3 35
3 36468 OS NO 5 SXPL3 35

The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 28th May 2011.

As this road falls within the oldest part of Mickleover (a designated Conservation Area), the new lighting columns were slightly different to the typical installations installed throughout the rest of the City under the PFI - firstly, the columns were painted black, and were fitted with Metcraft 'Victoria' post-top lanterns; each running 45 Watt CPO-TW.

The first outgoing column from Etwall Road, a sleeved Stanton 7 concrete, supported a Thorn Beta 5 35 Watt SOX lantern.

Not all of the new columns were installed alongside an outgoing equivalent.

The tiny reflectors in these lanterns look lost in such a large optical area. The optic is tilted by five degrees in the direction of the carriageway.

Another Beta 5 followed - a length of insulation tape had been used to secure the lantern's bowl.

This close-up reveals that the part of the bowl clip that hooks into the indentation on the front of the bowl was broken; hence, the need for the tape.

The final new and old columns (adjacent the entrance to The Old Hall, Mickleover's oldest building) were barely visible, owing to the presence of overhanging tree branches.

This Beta 5 was older than the other two were. The whitened barium getter of the lamp suggests that the outer bulb was damaged. Despite this, the lamp still warmed up as normal at dusk.
