Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract

The Square, Mickleover

The equipment being removed consisted of the following items in 1997:

Seq. No. Lamp Number Location Lamp Type Watt Isolation Point
1 36051 O/S NOS 4/5 SXPL3 35
2 102270 JUNC ETWALL RD FL 8

The twin 8 Watt fluorescent signlight that illuminated the stop sign at the junction of Etwall Road was replaced in February 2010, when the junction was altered, in order that it could become a Give Way.

The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 28th May 2011.

As this road falls within the oldest part of Mickleover (a designated Conservation Area), the new lighting columns were slightly different to the typical installations installed throughout the rest of the City under the PFI - firstly, the columns were painted black, and were fitted with Metcraft 'Victoria' post-top lanterns; each running 60 Watt CPO-TW.

This area was rather sparsely lit prior to the commencement of the PFI scheme. Several of the new columns are installed in areas where there was previously no street lighting.

The new columns are 6 m in height; the same as the adjoining Hollow.

The only outgoing installation in this area consisted of a sleeved Stanton 7 concrete column supporting a Thorn Beta 5 35 Watt SOX lantern.

A Royce Thompson SC1000 photocell had been fitted to this lantern at some point during the PFI's involvement in Derby's street lighting.

The new lanterns incorporate miniature photocells (Royce Thompson Microstar 2000s) into their canopies; the minicells being less conspicuous than regular one-part NEMA photocells would be.
