Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract

Victor Avenue, Darley Ward

The equipment being removed consisted of the following items in 1997:

Seq. No. Lamp Number Location Lamp Type Watt Isolation Point
1 36575 ADJ NO 5 SXPL2 35
2 36576 O/S ENDWOOD SXPL3 35

The following photographs were taken on Sunday, 29th May 2011.

As this road falls within a Conservation Area, the new lighting here was a little different to the normal equipment installed on the PFI's relighting schemes - the columns are 5 m in height; painted black, and each is fitted with a Metcraft Victoria post-top lantern running a 45 Watt CPO-TW lamp. As the above records suggest, only two columns were installed on this road prior to the commencement of the PFI scheme. This total was then doubled following the installation of the new lighting.

The first of the outgoing can (just!) be seen on the left of the picture below - the effectiveness of the lantern being somewhat questionable!

The optic within the Victoria lanterns is slightly angled (by five degrees), in order to allow a greater spread of light across the road.

The Thorn Beta 5 attached to the outgoing column really had started reverting back to nature!

The power supply to the third new column had had to be obtained from a point across the road; the reinstated trench containing the necessary ducting can be seen in the carriageway.

The miniature photocell can be seen fitted to this lantern's canopy:

The second outgoing column also supported a Beta 5. This column entered service on Tuesday, 28th January 1997.

A Royce Thompson SC1000 photocell had been fitted to this lantern at some point during the PFI's involvement in Derby's street lighting.
