Local Eclatec Elipt 55s

The Elipt lantern, made by French manufacturer Eclatec, can be seen on various streets in Derby City Centre, in its larger '55' form. The first examples of this disc-shaped lantern appeared in the City in August 2003, with more examples appearing a few years later.

This Elipt is to be found on Bold Lane.

Miniature photocells are fitted to the rear of the lanterns (not visible here). I had previously thought that one-part NEMA photocells were also fitted above the brackets and covered in black insulation tape in order that they would operate permanently 'live'; however, on closer inspection, the contraption appears to be bolted to the bracket.

Nearby, a column supporting two Elipts was seen. One of the lanterns serves to illuminate the carriageway, whilst the other is for the benefit of pedestrians using the pavement.

The lanterns all feature slightly curved glass bowls.

A twin-arm column is situated at the junction of Sadler Gate and the Strand.
