Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract

Willson Road, Littleover

(Incorporating Brooklands Drive and Cross Close)

Willson Road was still home to a couple of cast iron columns in May 2010, however, by then, the columns were living on borrowed time, as replacement columns were being installed around them.

The following photographs were taken on Sunday, 9th May 2010.

The first column featured here sported a swan neck bracket and top-entry Thorn Beta 5. The telegraph pole visible in the background also looks to be "historically interesting".

A Revo 'Moseley' column was next. This supported a curved bracket that had been modified to accommodate a side-entry Beta 5.

Moving on to the section of road known as Brooklands Drive, a sleeved Stanton 7 concrete column could be seen. The column ended its days supporting a Philips MI 26 lantern, although it may once (in pre-sleeving days) have been fitted with a top-entry lantern running a tungsten lamp, as photographs on this page prove.

An unsleeved Stanton 10 column was next. Another top-entry Beta 5 was installed here.

Cross Close (top name!) is a short path linking Hollowood Avenue with Brooklands Drive. Another cast iron column was installed here; apart from the different lanterns fitted and different amounts of restoration undertaken, the installation was identical to my ESLA's column. Whilst I have never found out exactly where the ESLA and its bracket were originally removed from (the items were sourced from a reclaims yard), it is perfectly possible that they were once installed in this area, especially as the as-removed paint finish applied to the metalwork was of a similar colour to the cast iron installations that existed here.
