Hilclare Lowbay
Acquired in December 2025.
Thanks to Arlen Moulton for donating this fitting to the Collection. This lowbay was removed from a warehouse after its interior lighting was changed to LED; this being despite the fitting having been converted to take an LED lamp already.
The typical lowbay design is a cuboid-shaped box, with the lamp surrounded by a sheet aluminium reflector, and the output section being a wire guard, low profile polycarbonate bowl, or (as with this example) a flat glass cover. An LED 'corn' lamp has replaced the original SON (high pressure sodium) lamp, although the (disconnected) discharge lamp control gear remains installed within the portion of the fitting beneath the lampholder.
The Hilclare label is attached in the bottom corner of the fitting.
Removing three screws on the front face allows the bodywork to be removed, allowing access to the lamp and gear.
The gear components all date from early 2000, with the ballast being the oldest (produced between the 7th and 13th February), and the capacitor being the newest (10th - 16th April).
The ignitor could be faulty, as the inner insulation has popped out of the can.
