104C. Main Street, Youlgreave, Alport, Bakewell, Derbyshire Dales Attached to a building in the centre of Youlgreave (pronounced, and spelt occasionally, as "Youlgrave") village is a cast iron bracket produced by the Electric Street Lighting Apparatus (ESLA) company of Canterbury. What makes this bracket somewhat unusual is that it is a type that is designed to be affixed to a column, and appears to have been adapted to be used as a wall bracket; perhaps, unofficially, using a local blacksmith or similar, rather than being ordered for this purpose from the manufacturer - ESLA produced many actual wall mounting brackets, and none of these looked to have been adapted from one of their standard column brackets.
The part of the building to which the bracket is affixed is possibly a later extension to the original property. Certainly, the supply cable feeding the bracket is a modern PVC-sheathed type. The bracket design itself is uncommon, featuring two lengths of pipe that terminate at a 90 degree elbow, rather than the usual swan neck arrangement.
The bracket doesn't face exactly squarely across the road, and may have been struck by a high-sided vehicle at some point in the past.
Whatever lantern was fitted to this bracket originally is long gone; a 1980s' Thorn Beta 5 35 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lantern now occupies the bracket.
Two fairly thick iron struts attach to the building, with the fuse / time switch box then attaching to them (notice that one of the bolts is missing). The ESLA logo is visible within the centre of the box. Disused bolts are installed in the bracket's spigot cap - in an act of solidarity, one of these is missing here too!
The bedroom whose window is located directly below the bracket must be well lit at night!
From a practical point-of-view, threading a cable through the bracket structure must be difficult, owing to the double 90 degree bends that it would have to negotiate to reach the fuse box.
