109EC. Off Sunny Heys Road, Meltham, Kirklees, West Yorkshire With thanks to Dwight for informing me of this Survivor. Installed at the start of a footpath to Helme Lane is an abandoned 1950s' 15 ft (5 m) Stanton 7 concrete column with 'B'-type top-entry bracket supporting a later Thorn Beta 5 35 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lantern. Installed alongside is a 5 m sheet mid-hinged steel column made by CU Phosco, and topped with an Urbis Axia LED lantern - this being a necessity, as concrete bollards prevent through vehicular access to Broadlands Road, making access for a maintenance vehicle difficult, particularly because of parked cars being in the way too. Indeed, this is probably why the concrete column has been left installed, instead of being removed when the new column was commissioned.
The two columns have their lanterns angled in different directions - with the Axia being angled towards the footpath, whereas the Beta 5 is angled towards the roadway and houses.
The Axia is switched using a Royce Thompson Oasis 2000 photocell, whereas a SELC 841 does the same for the Beta 5.
The Beta 5's becoming disused has led to the inside of the bowl appearing especially grubby.
A small length of the lantern's supply cable remains in the base - if someone had an inverter, they would (potentially) be able to bring the Beta 5 back into operation temporarily!
This view makes for a worthy comparison between new and old.
I can't help wondering whether the presence of the old column would actually prevent the new one from being lowered for maintenance...if that is the case, it rather defeats the point of installing the new column initially. In the background, another abandoned column; this one being tubular steel and supporting a Philips MI 26, is visible.
A lamp is still fitted within the Beta 5.
