112I. London Road / George Street / Duck Lane, Woburn, Bedfordshire Installed on these roads, as well as on Leighton Street, are some rather vintage street lighting lanterns dating from the 1950s and 60s; all of which appear to remain in nightly operation.
This cast iron column supporting a swan neck bracket and ELECO "Ware Mk III" HW 852 / "Baldock Mk III" HW 853 is to be found on the part of the road where London Road becomes George Street. The 'PC' prefix to the installation's maintenance number may indicate that it is under Parish Council ownership, which would explain how it has survived.
The refractor bowl fitted is not one of the standard ELECO options, and may be an early replacement.
The installation is the first in the village when approaching from the east.
A Royce Thompson S300-C photocell with a 20 mm conduit thread has been added to the lantern as a replacement for the (assumed) original time switch control.
Moving into the village, and another cast iron column is seen. As a bonus, this column is positioned alongside an illuminated signpost with a 1980s' Forest City twin 8 Watt fluorescent signlight fitted.
The lantern is a GEC Z5590, fitted with an LED lamp. The bowl is remarkably clear; however, it is a replacement, with Google Street View imagery revealing that the original, discoloured polycarbonate bowl was replaced at some point after October 2010. The photocell detector here is for a Royce Thompson P42.
Cast into the swan neck's fuse box is "E.L.E.C. St Albans" - it must be an early ELECO product.
On the other side of the house, on Duck Lane, a wall-mounted Revo C14409/T "Bell Top" was to be found.
The bracket pipe forms the curve that goes on to support the lantern, rather than passing through a finial or right-angled elbow.
This uses the same type of refractor bowl seen fitted to the ELECO lantern, although as Revo offered such a bowl as an option with the Bell Top, this one is probably original. A Zodion photocell, also with a 20 mm conduit connection, has been attached rather crudely to the lantern canopy - the curved cast aluminium shape never being intended to accommodate any sort of photocell.
