12RA. Fitzroy Square, Fitzrovia, London Borough of Camden Situated throughout the square are several 15 ft (5 m) Concrete Utilities' 'Fluted' columns supporting LED versions of the Phosco company's P109 'Georgian' lantern. The columns are painted black, giving the appearance that they are cast iron, rather than concrete, although where this paint has flaked away (especially at base level), their natural finish is revealed. One of these installations is included in the Concrete Columns section of my CU Phosco catalogue, which confirmed their base material.

This example is situated on the south-eastern corner of the square.

The light source on this modern P109 is a single LED optic in the centre of the top part of the lantern.

'Concrete Utilities Ltd' is moulded into the column's base section.

The overlapping CU logo is also detailed.

The column also uses the familiar drop-latch lock on its inspection door; however, the lock mechanism appears to have been replaced with a bolt to secure it.

A horizontal crack had formed behind the door aperture on this example.

Taken from my catalogue, this 1989 image shows a different column in this area supporting a P109 containing a lamp and glass prismatic refractor dome.

Typically, by 2024, this column had been replaced with a similar-looking product.

The main difference being the lack of a flared end by the lantern on the replacement column.

The manufacturer's name on this column included 'Bollard' in prominent lettering.
