134AK. Off Harberts Road, Harlow, Essex With thanks to Dwight for informing me of these Survivors. Located adjacent the car park for a small recreational area are two 15 ft (5 m) concrete columns, with one being a derelict Concrete Utilities' 'Byway NX' type with an 'Arc 4' side-entry bracket and Thorn Beta 5 35 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lantern; the other being a mystery design, although it may be a Concrete Utilities' product too. This too supports a Beta 5; albeit, a top-entry version. This installation may still be in use, or at least, retain a live power supply, though I am uncertain of this.

The mystery column is very angular in appearance, with a shaft that tapers to make it the same thickness as the bracket at the point where the two join.

A short length of pipe links the bracket to the lantern - I assume that the bracket's gentle curve would foul the canopies of some lanterns (the Beta 5 being one of them), requiring the pipe to act as a spacer between the two.

Unusually, there is a decorative recess moulded into the column shaft. The base compartment is considerably smaller than that seen on rival columns, although the door still incorporates the "drop latch" lock that was a common feature of Concrete Utilities' products.

There is damage to the Beta 5's bowl, and the lantern interior looks especially grubby because of this. The above-lamp reflector / gear tray also looks to be rusted heavily.

I suspect that the Byway NX column is a slightly later addition.

This Beta 5's interior is in a similar condition, although I don't recall seeing any damage - the apparent 'hole' at the front of the bowl is the lampholder wiring, but it appears distorted here, owing to the bowl refractor positioning.

The column's door is missing, revealing that the base has been stripped of its electricity supply cut-out and associated cabling.
