134E. St Michael's Road, Sittingbourne, Kent Installed in a small car park alongside Sittingbourne Railway Station is a 25 ft (8 m) concrete column of unknown manufacturer (probably Concrete Utilities) supporting a lantern whose identity is also unknown (though it may be an ELECO product). The installation is unlikely to be in operation any longer, as three LED floodlights are installed alongside at a lower height.
A steel ladder is attached to the column to allow access to the lantern for maintenance purposes.
The bracket (in poor condition, with much of its concrete having eroded to expose the inner steel rebar) is believed to be a Southern Railway design, and the installation may date back to the 1930s.
Beneath the lichen growth on the canopy, the distinctive 'flare' decoration applied to many ELECO lanterns is visible, making me believe that it could be one of their products. A small break is present in the lantern's Perspex bowl.
The bowl's support ring is also loose; the locking wing nut having gone missing.
Rather than the column having a base compartment, the supply cable passes through a conduit system attached to the rear of the structure. An ESLA 'Harrison Type' fuse box, complete with hand switch for operating the lantern, is positioned at approximate head height.
