142D. Orchard Way, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire Situated throughout this T-shaped cul-de-sac are 8 m tubular steel columns, all supporting Thorn Alpha 9 90 Watt SOX lanterns. Although the columns are painted Nottinghamshire's standard light grey colour, I suspect that they fall under private ownership, particularly with the Alpha 9s remaining extant in 2023, and a damaged example having not been replaced. If this is the case, there is possibility that the road and lighting were adopted by the Council in the past, or may have been planned to be adopted, but never were.
The damaged example is seen first - this is located at the junction where the road splits into two.
The bowl and lamp are missing, revealing that the lanterns have the lamp control gear installed within the column base, rather than in the lantern itself.
The internal wiring is visible within the lantern.
As the lantern carries Thorn EMI branding, it will have been made at some point around 1984-7.
A 1990s' Hy-Lite HL2 photocell is fitted in the lantern's NEMA socket.
Turning up the right-hand road, a more intact Alpha 9 is seen, although the bracket is misaligned in respect of the carriageway.
The bowl is in need of cleaning, making the lamp difficult to see within it.
Two wood pigeons were using the following lantern and bracket to keep an eye on the surrounding area.
A carpet of dirt lined the underside of this lantern's bowl.
The columns appear to be made by Fabrikat - the company is based in Sutton-in-Ashfield (as is rival column manufacturer Abacus), and so their products are common in the area.
Here, a 30 Watt LED retrofit lamp is installed, and the photocell appears to be a generic ST7316-type product.
Another view of the replacement lamp.
This installation is seen on the left-hand fork of the junction.
While this one retained a SOX lamp, this looks to be rather blackened around the electrodes, and may not be operational. An HL2 cell is fitted here too.
The bracket outreach appeared longer with this example.
This bowl was in particularly grubby condition.
The boxy nature of the Alpha 9 is evident here.
