170G. Tigers Road, Wigston, Leicestershire Located at the end of the road leading to HMP Fosse Way (built on the site of the former HMP Glen Parva) is a 15 ft (5 m) Stanton 10 concrete column with short side-entry outreach bracket supporting an early example of a Thorn Beta 5 / AEI Amber Minor lantern, designed for 45 - 60 Watt SO/H and SOI/H, and (in more recent times), 35 Watt SOX, lamps. The installation (and indeed, the road itself), is likely to be private, and would pre-date the Glen Parva prison, as this opened in 1974, and by then, the Beta 5's design had been altered from the design seen here. Therefore, the column is probably a Survivor from the days of the Glen Parva Barracks, which occupied the same site until 1970.

The column is positioned just outside of the gates leading into the prison complex. A second Stanton 10 column, now topped with a Crompton Galaxy Minor floodlight, is visible beyond the fence.

The Beta 5 features the original 'ribbed' style of refractor bowl that locates into an aluminium support ring. Later versions did away with the ring, and employed a revised bowl that was secured directly by the single toggle clip.

The installation was in good condition for saying that it would have been over 50 years old at the time of photographing, and had been through several owners in its lifetime.

The widely-spaced refractors that continue along the front and back ends of the bowl are a feature of these early Beta 5s.

A small vertical crack has formed in the rear corner of the bowl, allowing a small amount of dirt to gather within the lantern.
