174C. Attenborough Close / Legge Lane, Birmingham With thanks to Dwight for informing me of these Survivors. Installed on both of these roads are 15 ft (5 m) Revo columns supporting Group 'B' lanterns, designed for running 80 Watt mercury vapour (MBF) lamps, which they may still do, even in 2023. Simplex Diadems make up the majority of these lanterns - Simplex taking over the former Revo production lines in the late 1970s - which suggests that the columns may have supported different lanterns originally.

This installation is to be found at the start of Attenborough Close.

Unlike the Revo version of the Diadem, which used a glass bowl, the Simplex version employs a polycarbonate bowl instead.

An AC Ford AC850 was fitted to the next column - this must have been a replacement for a faulty Diadem at some point.

As well as featuring the standard Revo two-prong door bolt, the columns include the Birmingham coat of arms in the casting for the door.

The third column saw a return to having a Diadem fitted. Notice the ladder bars on the column shaft.

With the bowl having discoloured so severely, the lantern's useful output will have diminished considerably.

An identical installation existed on Legge Lane; however, this column was painted black with gold highlights.

The overall discolouration is not as severe on this example's bowl.

All of the lanterns now incorporate Telensa radio nodes to control their switching, rather than the one-part photocells that would have been fitted originally.
