174FC. Crossfield Road, Stechford, Kitts Green, Birmingham, West Midlands With thanks to Dwight for informing me of these Survivors. Situated at the junction of Folliott Road are two Simplex Diadem lanterns for 80 - 125 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) lamps; one of which is attached to a 10 ft (3·048 m) Revo 'Moseley' cast iron column with later AC Ford swan neck bracket and control gear / fuse box. The other is attached to a more modern tubular steel column, although both lanterns are likely to be of around the same age.
The cast iron column is located adjacent a railway bridge, with the road narrowing accordingly beneath the structure. At some point after July 2012, the present grey paint finish was applied to the column - prior to that, the metalwork was painted brown.
A crack has formed in the Diadem's polycarbonate bowl, although the plastic is still sufficiently transparent to allow the lamp to be seen within it.
The AC Ford box cover is now secured with a 'Tamtorque' band.
The bowl is a slightly poor fit into the canopy on this particular example.
Cast into the door is the Coat of Arms for Birmingham; unsurprisingly, this is the earlier incarnation of the design, which was superseded in 1974, when Sutton Coldfield was included as being part of Birmingham, and the West Midlands county came into existence.
The tubular steel column also used to be painted brown - some flecks of the earlier colour are visible where the grey has chipped away.
A Telensa Telecell now provides the automatic switching to this lantern, having replaced the previous photocell control. Although this example's bowl is intact, it is not secured correctly, leading to a gap forming on the facing side of the lantern.
