176A. Off the A5, Corwen, Glyndyfrdwy, Denbighshire Located on the forecourt of Brynteg Garage is a 20 ft (6 m) Abacus base-hinged tubular steel column supporting an Atlas Alpha 3 lantern for 250 - 400 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) lamps. Previously, an identical installation existed on the other side of the forecourt, but this was cut down at some point after July 2015, owing (presumably) to the column being corroded to dangerous levels. This mounting height and wattage combination is unusual; however, in this scenario, the two lights would have served as floodlights over the general forecourt area, rather than for street lighting over a larger area.

With thanks to the (rather baffled!) attendant in the petrol station kiosk for allowing me to take these pictures.

The lantern attaches to the column by means of a plain outreach bracket.

The usually-shiny pressed aluminium canopy is dull, suggesting that the lantern hasn't been lit for a long time. Although there is slight bowl damage, the curved line that passes along the Perspex from the front clip is actually just a drip run. Flakes of paint on the rear casting suggest that this would have been painted whatever colour the column was at the time, although the current black paint has existed from March 2009 (at least).

Signs advertising for Visa and Access card payments are attached to the column - in the case of Access, these cards haven't existed since 1996, when the brand was bought out by rivals MasterCard.

A symmetrical drip line exists on this side of the bowl too.

The stump of the second column looked rather forlorn - the hinge barrel appears to have been cut away, which would have caused the shaft section to separate from its base.

A Mineral-Insulated supply cable (required due to the fire risk at the petrol station) terminates into a conduit box, with the wiring then feeding a British Lighting Industries AME 53157.4 400 Watt MBF ballast and BICC C2126 20 µF capacitor.

To give an idea as to the age of these installations, the capacitor carries November 1963 as a date of manufacturer.
