197B. Carr Bank Avenue, Ramsbottom, Bury, Greater Manchester With thanks to Dwight for informing me of these Survivors. Soldiering on, on this loop cul-de-sac, in 2024 are four 15 ft (5 m) Concrete Utilities' Avenue 2D columns that retain their original Arc 2 brackets and Phosware (CU Phosco) P122 / SO60 lanterns, designed for running low pressure sodium lamps - originally, these would have been the 60 Watt SO/H and SOI/H types before the advent of the SOX lamp reduced the wattage to 40 Watts, followed by 35 Watts towards the end of the 1960s. With the lanterns now converted to run LED retro-fit lamps instead, hopefully, the installations should be safe from replacement for a while.

The first column is situated near the junction with Carr Bank Road / Springwood Street.

The lantern isn't in great condition, unfortunately - the so-called 'Oddie' key, employed to lock the bowls closed in Phosware lanterns from this period is missing, resulting in a length of insulation tape being used to hold the bowl in place instead. There also appears to be a burn hole in the Perspex of the bowl itself, resulting in dirt and moisture gathering in the lantern.

The second column was situated next to an established tree, and was difficult to photograph, but the third was in a far more open location.

Although this example retains its Oddie key, it mustn't have any effect at securing the bowl any longer, as once again, the bowl is taped in place.

The fourth was after the loop, heading back towards the first column.

Although the Oddie key system was an intriguing way of securing the bowl without resorting to external clips or toggles, as is proven on this street, it was not a particularly good solution, and would be abandoned in favour of the traditional clip approach with later CU Phosco products. The NEMA photocell controls are, of course, not original, but thanks to there being plenty of space within the lanterns to accommodate the sockets for these (particularly where the lamp control gear is installed remotely), they do convert quite easily.

The new lamps are the Venture 'Re-SOX' type, designed for running directly off the mains, and so any sodium lamp control gear would be defunct after conversion to LED.
