Bay Road, Bracknell, Berkshire Situated at the end of an access road for a series of garages is a GEC Z5643 post-top lantern attached to a 15 ft (5 m) Concrete Utilities' 'Utility Major' lighting column. Although this type of column began production in 1938, I believe that the example seen here is a newer (1950s or 1960s) version, particularly as the Z5643 (and its sister lantern, the Z5640) are 1950s' designs.

Originally, there may have been two identical installations on the access road; however, the first column (visible in the background) is now a tubular steel hockey stick, and supports a Siemens SRL 35.

The wide canopy, transparent undersection to the bowl, and stylish central locking finial make the Z5643 a very distinctive design.

Stepping back a few paces allows the canopy-mounted two-part photocell detector to be seen.

The Utility Major is unusual for being a circular-based column, with most concrete columns having more angular bases.
