21MA. Upton Drive, Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire Installed on the outside the boundary fence between Upton Drive and Trent and Mersey Canal is a Stanton 1808 25 ft (8 m) concrete column supporting a GEC Z9554 135 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lantern - the earlier, aluminium-canopied version of the Z9554M. The installation is left over from when the Pirelli tyre factory occupied this portion of land, with redevelopment occurring in 2015, although Google Street View imagery suggests that this area within the factory site was already redundant by 2009. I do remember other Z9554s around the site remaining in operation, however.

As the column was situated outside of the factory's perimeter fence, it was probably beyond the scope of the redevelopment works. On the canal side, a chain link fence prevents access to the narrow slither of land on which the column is installed.

The bracket is in extremely precarious condition, having lost much of its concrete. Fortunately, as the Z9554 is not an overly heavy lantern, the stress being placed on the exposed inner pipe would be limited.

A worn-out Philips lamp is installed within the bowl-less lantern. The construction of the arc tube support at the cap end suggests that it was made no later than the mid-1990s.

From the canal side, the awkwardness of gaining access to the column is revealed.

The surrounding tree branches may have expedited the bracket's deterioration.
