221. Springfield Road, Horsham, West Sussex Located outside the Springfield House office building, near Albion Way, are five 6 m tubular steel columns (three of which are pictured below), made by British Steel, supporting CU Phosco P178 post-top lanterns. The installations are likely to date from the 1980s, judging by the architectural style of Springfield House, although the P178's design has its origins in the late 1960s, and remained in production until the early 2010s. The lamp type and wattage of the three lanterns is unknown.

The first column was leaning backwards when pictured in June 2024 - it had probably been nudged by a vehicle, owing it being placed within a grassed area.

Dirt has gathered on the outer faces of the bowl and canopy, but this lantern is in generally good condition otherwise.

The door to this column was insecure (plastic cable ties had been wrapped around the base to try to hold it in place), and had slipped downwards slightly, allowing the lamp control gear components to be glimpsed within. A capacitor is visible here, with the ballast being positioned to the left (not visible). This is unusual for the P178, as in the majority of cases, the gear was housed within the lantern itself.

The other two columns are within the office building's car park.

Tree pruning works (that appear to be recent) have allowed the foreground lantern to be seen clearly again.

Meanwhile, climbing foliage has attached itself to the column shaft of the background lantern, but this has not yet reached the lantern.
