227. Scots Lane, Salisbury, Wiltshire Installed within a compound owned by BT / Openreach are two 5 m sheet steel columns, with both fitted with Thorn lanterns; one of these being a Beta 2, for 55 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lamps, while the other is an Alpha 5, for 135 Watt SOX lamps, and installed at far lower a mounting height than these would be installed at ordinarily (around 10 m). Two wall-mounted Beta 2s make up the remainder of the lighting within the compound, suggesting that SOX remains the source of choice for lighting the area in 2024.

The Alpha 5 looks incredibly ungainly at such a low mounting height.

While some Alpha 5s were converted from linear low pressure sodium (SLI/H) operation when those lamps became obsolete, this example looks to have been SOX forever.

A minor break exists in the rear of the bowl, but other than that, the lantern is in good condition.

The size differences between the two lanterns (as well as the Urbis Axia 3 LED lantern on Scots Lane itself)

Something rather crucial in making the Beta 2 produce any useful light is missing - no doubt, having the Alpha 5 lit meant that a second lantern here was unnecessary!
