31. Scarborough Road, Walsall, West Midlands Located on land occupied formerly by the Pleck Working Men's Club, but now part of the car park for the Bradford Arms Public House, is a 25 ft (8 m) Stewart & Lloyd tubular steel column supporting a Revo Horizon lantern. Prior to the demolition of the club building, a second, identical installation existed further down the site; however, this was lost at some point after July 2011. Assuming that the remaining column was not re-supplied from the pub building, the installation is likely to be disused in the modern era.
The column is pictured from Scarborough Road itself, although the car park is accessible from Pleck Road.
This is the original version of the Horizon, with a more angular canopy and glass bowl optimised for running medium-pressure mercury vapour (MA/V) lamps through a magnetic arc deflector. Later versions had a smoother, curved canopy, and a bowl optimised for high-pressure mercury (MBF) lamps instead.
A convenient break in the wall allowed the column to be seen in all its glory, revealing that this is the column type with a hinged inspection door.
The wood pigeon sentry guarding the installation kept a close eye on my actions for the duration of my visit!
