3BA. Off Alfreton Road, Little Eaton Attached to the corner of a disused terrace of houses is a rather functional wall bracket supporting a top-entry Thorn Beta 5 35 Watt SOX lantern. I suspect that the light may have been installed by a previous occupant of the adjacent property, rather than being a street light in public ownership, as the roadway alongside is not adopted by the Local Authority, although Little Eaton Public Right of Way 9 does pass alongside. Given the derelict nature of the houses, the lantern is unlikely to remain in operation.
The wall bracket is mounted at a relatively low height on the wall - a possible deliberate decision to avoid light from entering the bedroom window alongside.
The wall bracket is formed from sections of oblong steel channel, with a piece of decorative scrollwork linking the outreach section to the wall plate.
The supply cable feeding the installation terminates into a small junction box further down the wall, with another cable then heading into the property.
A 1990s' Hy-Lite HL4N photocell would have controlled the lantern's operation when in use.
This view demonstrates the area that the lantern would have been installed to illuminate.
Rather than be coupled to the bracket using the lantern's own top-entry thread, the Beta 5's aluminium canopy appears to have been drilled, with two long bolts inserted and then passed through the bracket structure to hold everything together. The lack of use has caused moss to form on the outside of the bowl.
