4IA. Osmaston Road, City Centre Situated opposite Hartington Street is a tubular steel combined lighting / CCTV column that retains an integral gear Thorn Alpha 4 135 Watt SOX lantern. This lantern became defunct as part of Derby's Street Lighting PFI, which saw the installation of a standalone 10 m column supporting a Philips 'Iridium' SGS 254 a short distance from this one. Why the Alpha 4 and its bracket were not removed at the time is unknown, although there may have been issues in gaining access to the base of the CCTV column, resulting in the SOX lantern being forgotten. The CCTV column would have been installed in place of an older 10 m column that was likely to have run a GEC Z9554 (also 135 Watt SOX) in the early 2000s; both columns were numbered 32614. At the time, Hartington Street suffered issues with night-time antisocial behaviour, and the cameras would have been added as a deterrent.
By the time that the photographs were taken, the two largest cameras had been removed from the column, leaving only a small camera present towards the top of the column shaft.
The CCTV column is of a much wider diameter than a standard column would be - this was to reduce vibration in the camera images. A small spigot protrudes from the top of the column, allowing a standard bracket to be fitted.
The Alpha 4's bowl hangs open, revealing a Philips-made OSRAM lamp within the lantern. This is broken, as can be seen by the white barium getter immediately in front of the lampholder - in a healthy lamp, this would be silver.
