51D. Welbeck Grove, Allestree, Derby City Centre Installed within a large parking area for a property at the end of this cul-de-sac is a 5 m tubular steel column supporting a Simplex Aries 35 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lantern. The installation is in private ownership, which explains its survival, and may have been installed when the property served as a church in the past. As the property no longer serves this purpose, the installation could have been abandoned but left in place owing to the difficulty - and cost - that removing it would involve.

The column emerges from behind a fence and gate that have been installed in more recent years. Within the parking area, and next to the column, is an electrical substation - I wonder whether the column could be fed directly from that.

A small amount of surface rust has gathered on the bracket.

A non-original Royce Thompson Monostar 1000 photocell is fitted in the Aries. As this was the default photocell used by Derby City Council in the early-mid 2000s, the lantern may have been repaired by the Council at the request of the church as and when required.

A Philips lamp is visible within the lantern. This version of the Aries sees the lamp control gear installed remotely, in the column base.
