69CED. Franklin Road, Bournville, Stirtchley, Birmingham, West Midlands Located within the compound of a small filling station and repair garage are two tubular steel posts, with both supporting 1960s' Atlas Alpha 7 lanterns, although only one of the two lanterns is intact. The lantern was designed for running a 250 - 400 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) lamp; however, neither lantern still accommodated any lamp when pictured in February 2025. Despite this, the more accessible of the two posts was painted red at some point after June 2016.
The red post is built into a low wall.
The aluminium spigot cap and bracket pipe from a Leader column appear to be fixed into the top of the post.
Although grubby, the glass refractor bowl is intact. This was seen to be hanging open in the June 2016 Google Street View, but had been secured by the following March.
The second example was in overall poorer condition, with ivy having grown up the post.
The bowl was missing completely from this Alpha 7.
The missing bowl allowed the lantern's basic internal construction to be revealed. While this example is no longer in use, the sooty mark on the inside of the canopy indicates that it would have clocked up many hours of service before falling into disuse.
