70B. The Park / The Drive, Hewell Grange, Tardebigge, Worcestershire With thanks to Dwight for informing me of these Survivors. Installed throughout these roads are a number of 15 ft (5 m) 'Avenue 2D' concrete columns, made by Concrete Utilities. The Avenue 2Ds support a mixture of 'Arc 2' and 'Banstead' brackets, although all run top-entry Thorn Beta 5 35 Watt SOX lanterns; these would be 1980s' replacements for whatever lanterns were fitted originally. These roads are believed to be in private ownership (they may have been staffing accommodation for the nearby Hewell Grange prison when new), which explains how the lighting has survived, particularly in the modern, LED, era.
This column on The Park is one of the examples that are topped with a Banstead bracket. Notice that the base compartment faces away from the road and towards a garden wall, making access a little more difficult for engineers.
A hairline vertical crack is present at the top of the column shaft.
A little further along the road is this Arc 2-topped column.
The lantern is in poor condition, with the bowl being missing (and judging by the state of the reflector / gear tray, this has been the case for a while) and the lamp's outer bulb having blackened. What could be the lantern's original Royce Thompson P5 photocell is fitted in the NEMA socket. The concrete is cracking around the lantern coupler, and part of the fin at the rear of the bracket has also suffered damage.
This example on The Drive saw a return to a Banstead bracket.
The plastic bowl clip has fractured with age, requiring a series of cable ties to be wrapped around the entire lantern to hold the bowl (which also appears to have suffered damage) in place.
An identical installation existed at the top of the hill.
A series of anti-bird spikes are applied to the top part of the bracket.
This ewe and her two lambs watched my antics with cautious interest from an adjacent field!
