97KB. Ironstone Lane, Chase Terrace, Burntwood, Staffordshire Installed within the car park for a Scout headquarters on the corner of School Lane are a series of lengths of tubular steel pipe that have been screwed together to form a makeshift lighting column. This is topped with a 1980s' Thorn EMI Alpha 1 90 Watt SOX lantern, which most definitely is not makeshift in any form!
The lower half of the 'column' is heavily rusted, whereas the upper half is free from corrosion.
The front part of the Alpha 1's 'Opticell' bowl is damaged, allowing moisture and dirt to gather within the normally-sealed lamp area.
Unusually, the acrylic used in the Opticell's construction has become translucent as a result of exposure to sunlight - ordinarily, this remains free from such degradation in an Alpha 1. Although a NEMA photocell is fitted, no photocell is installed.
