Hazel Grove, Matlock, Derbyshire Dales Attached to a relatively short (less than 4 m, as an estimate) tubular steel is a lantern from GEC's Z5713 range (specifically, a Z5714 or Z5719), running an 80 Watt MBF (mercury lamp). Other identical columns nearby suggest that further examples of these lanterns existed originally; now, only this one remains. These columns are in private ownership for Dales Housing, which probably explains how a lantern running an MBF lamp remains in place in 2026 - all other street lighting installations on surrounding, public roads, having been changed to LED some years earlier.

The column is the first on the private road.

The lantern's paint finish is in relatively good condition for its age, though a portion has worn away from the canopy.

The GEC logo is visible on the lower casting.

The detector for a Royce Thompson P42 two-part photocell is visible on top of the canopy when the lantern is seen from the other side.

A glance into the base reveals that everything is virtually untouched since the column was connected in the 1980s - right down to the abundance of cobwebs! The P42 relay test switch is seen in the 'Test' position as I was keen to see if the lantern still worked; unfortunately, the lamp didn't appear to strike, although it may simply have been so old and dim that this was not visible in daylight.
