Off Dimple Road, Matlock, Derbyshire Dales Located in the rear car park of the Youth Hostel Association (YHA)'s National Office are two 25 ft (8 m) tubular steel columns, with one still supporting its (potentially) original Atlas / Thorn Alpha 3 lantern, for 250 - 400 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) / SON (high pressure sodium) lamps.
Typically, the column is located at the far end of the car park, and closer access to it was prevented by the presence of locked gates further up the driveway on the date that these pictures were taken. Luckily, having a camera with a strong zoom helps in these circumstances!
The close-up of the lantern reveals that it appears to be fitted with an LED 'corn' lamp these days; while this is a shame, at least, the lantern is likely to remain in use.
