Compton Close, Hanwell, London Borough of Ealing Located on the roadway outside a school are several Fabrikat 5 m tubular steel hockey stick columns, each supporting an ELECO (or, more likely, Davis, given that they probably date to the early 1990s) GR 501 lantern, for 35 - 55 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lamps. Although a product of the 1960s, the GR 501 remained in production for many years beyond that decade, with no discernible major differences existing between old and new examples, save for the removal of the aluminium bowl retaining ring on later examples. As these Survivors were discovered in December 2025, long after SOX lamp production by Philips had ceased, they could be in private ownership, with Compton Close not being adopted by the Local Authority, as all surrounding roads had had their lighting columns renewed by the early 2010s.
The use of hockey stick columns creates a rather classic appearance to these installations.
A 35 Watt SOX lamp is present in this example, leaving a section of empty bowl in front, which would be filled when the longer 55 W lamps were employed.
Two further examples were visible from the adjacent parallel footpath known as Wenman Alley.
The upward tilt on these lanterns is quite sharp, which probably places the lamps at about their maximum permissible angle for being burnt cap-down. The similar GR 5011 saw the lampholder positioned at the front of the lantern instead, causing the cap to face upwards instead, and thus, eliminating problems of premature failure caused by the lamps being burnt cap-up.
