4h. Mount Carmel Street, Derby City Centre. Located on the steps leading to Burton Road is a cast iron column incorporated into the centre handrail with top-entry heritage lanterns fitted. Presently, the lanterns are fitted with mercury lamps, but they were fitted with CDO-ET lamps at installation (the control gear being located in a box above the column). The reason for the change is that the lanterns are difficult to work on due to the steps, and mercury lamps are usually long-lasting. The lanterns were installed when the lighting along the rest of the street was upgraded - previously, there had been a single top-entry lantern fitted - from memory, this resembled a Beta 4 but I cannot remember what it was for definite.

 

    The lanterns are controlled by a time switch positioned in the base of a nearby column:
