73a. Sinfin Health Centre - Off Arleston Lane. Standing adjacent the back entrance to the Health Centre is a 15 ft Abacus base-hinged column supporting a Thorn Gamma 5 post-top lantern. Until the late 2000s, identical examples could be seen around the grounds of the Health Centre; however, these columns now support post-top sphere lanterns instead - one of these Gamma 5s had been missing its canopy for many years - but for some reason, this one lantern was retained. I believe that these lanterns ran MBF lamps, although this is based on a very vague memory, and so I could be mistaken.

The installation is pictured from the ramp leading to the pedestrian underpass beneath Arleston Lane; hence, the presence of the barrier in the foreground.

Unlike my own Gamma 5 lanterns, which all have a separate cylindrical casting that allows the lantern to attach to a column shaft, this example attaches directly to the column itself - Abacus worked closely with Atlas, and latterly Thorn Lighting in the past, and produced a special version of their column, with a flared end, in order to accommodate the Gamma 5 lantern.

The distinctive appearance of the base-hinged section of the column confirms the Abacus involvement.
