The following photographs were taken on Sunday, 7th August 2011:

The first 'old' column to survive the Inner Ring Road scheme ended its days supporting a 1990s' Thorn Alpha 8 150 Watt SON-T lantern.

As a result of corrosion at the outgoing column's bracket joint, there was a noticeable difference in colour between the column and the bracket.

A Philips SGS 204 lantern was next.

The lantern's bowl was rather scorched immediately below the lamp.

Another Alpha 8 then followed.

This lantern's bowl showed signs of water ingress.

The new lanterns are the 'large' (SGS 254) version of the Philips Iridium; as these are internally sealed to IP66, and constructed in glass, rather than polycarbonate, they shouldn't (in theory, anyway!) show either of the two aging symptoms shown above.

Another equally-grubby Alpha 8 was situated alongside the pedestrian crossing. The fibres in the lantern's GRP canopy looked to be shedding rather heavily.

The final Alpha 8 ended its days fitted with a blue cone Royce Thompson SC1000 photocell.
