The following photographs were taken on Sunday, 24th October 2010 and Saturday, 30th October 2010:
GEC Z9538 lanterns made up the majority of the outgoing lanterns along here...
This first Z9538 was fitted with a vacuum-formed replacement bowl. Judging by the pool of water and dirt beneath the lamp, I would suggest that this lantern's IP sealing is not what it once was!
On the other hand, the replacement Iridium remained well sealed. A few scuff marks were present on the bowl, however; these would have appeared during installation.
A wholly newer installation was next for removal - this supported a Thorn Beta 2.
Another Beta 2 was fitted to the next column, which also supported a CCTV camera. As the camera is likely to remain, despite the relighting scheme, the column is not pictured here. This was also fitted with a Beta 2.
After this, we return to columns fitted with Z9538s. Just visible here is the dent in the outgoing column's door - presumably, the column was struck by a vehicle prior to the installation of the cast iron bollards at the edge of the carriageway.
This Z9538 retained its original polycarbonate bowl.
Both the outgoing and new lanterns are installed at the same mounting height - 6 m.
The position of the sun has made the bowl appear more clouded that it actually was:
A very narrow optic surrounded the Cosmo-White.
I can assure you that there is nothing even slightly amusing about the wording of the sign fitted to the next outgoing column...
A small length of webbing linked the brackets to the column spigots on the outgoing columns:
The following Z9538's bowl was missing in its entirety; however, the lamp itself didn't appear to have been affected by this loss.
The bowl had probably been missing for some time, judging by the rusting on the lampholder support plate.
The cables visible here are for communication and not power.
The next two installations were positioned outside the "Derb Small Busine Centre", according to the photograph below:
The welding around the outgoing column's bracket was visible in this close-up of the new lantern.
Another old and new column were positioned on the bend in the road before Carrington Street.
The shape of the Z9538's bowl can be seen here.
A mid-1980s' Beta 2 followed.
The Beta 2's bowl had become something of a makeshift greenhouse!
The Iridium appeared to be secured with only a single grub screw.
An 8 m Stewart and Lloyd column fitted with a Philips SGS 203 was installed near the London Road junction. This column supported a Thorn Alpha 1 lantern until only a few months before this scheme commenced. The replacement column is still of a 6 m nominal height.
The SGS 203 looked to be in reasonable condition, even though it will have been used elsewhere prior to being installed here.
The new column was positioned almost right up to the wall. Given that the canopy of an Iridium hinges upwards, future maintenance of this lantern will be...interesting, to say the least!
