The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 30th October 2010. The road was almost exclusively lit with GEC Z9554M 135 Watt SOX lanterns, right up until the replacement scheme commenced.

The road becomes Corden Avenue, Mickleover after these installations. Therefore, this installation is/was the first on Chain Lane.

A known fault with the Z9554M lantern is that their GRP canopies often become porous as the lanterns age; this example appeared to be suffering just such a problem. Interestingly, and I've only just spotted this myself whilst writing up these highly thought-provoking comments, this was the only Z9554M along Chain Lane to be fitted with a NEMA socket - the rest were switched via two-part photocells.

The SGS 254s employed on this scheme sport flat glass covers - this is unusual; most are fitted with at least a shallow bowl.

The Z9554Ms were fitted to Abacus-made columns.

Internally, this lantern still looked reasonably clean...externally, it's a wholly different story!

A rather meaty-looking joint connected the new column to the underground electricity supply. In order to provide an idea of scale, the cable feeding the column emerges on the bottom-left of the joint, immediately below the blue insulation tape that would have been used to prevent the sealing compound from escaping as the joint was being waterproofed.

The new lanterns look to be fitted with 150 Watt SON-T lamps.

Another outgoing column awaited its inevitable removal.

The refractors moulded into the Z9554M's bowl surround the lamp.

Many of the new columns were positioned away from their outgoing counterparts - perhaps someone was worried that the two would fight!

The Z9554M in the middle of the above picture is seen again below. A Zodion SS55 detector can just be seen emerging from the canopy.

Having a powerful optical zoom on your camera is very useful when photographing lanterns - this Iridium is fitted to the column seen to the right of the Z9554M column in the wide photograph.

Despite not resembling a police speed trap at all, I was surprised at the amount of motorists that braked as they passed me and noticed that I was taking photographs!

A cable tie had been wrapped around this Z9554M's bowl - presumably the front bowl clip was either broken or missing.

We move to the opposite side of the road for the next installation.

The new lanterns are mounted slightly higher than the Z9554Ms were - the Abacus columns were probably made to an imperial gauge, rather than a metric gauge, as the new columns will be.

The next column was positioned adjacent a telecommunications pole. Unsurprisingly, the new column here was installed away from the overhead lines.

The Abacus columns featured a distinctive style of bracket.

The following Z9554M's bowl had also been cable-tied in place. One of my pet hates (apart from seeing cable-tied bowls in the first place!) is when the tail part of the tie is not cut back to a more suitable length - it's probably just me!

Bizarrely, the next column was only 8 m in height and supported a Philips MA 90 90 Watt SOX lantern. This column was probably no more than about eight years old when it was removed - it was installed in place of another Z9554M installation when a new housing development was constructed opposite.

Another strange installation followed - a new 10 m column was installed to one side of the new development access, but was never (as far as I am aware) fitted with a bracket or lantern!

Returning to columns fitted with Z9554Ms now - this installation is pictured adjacent a particularly autumnal-looking tree.

Despite the presence of the tree, the insides of the lantern still looked clean.

This column was partly surrounded by the branches of another tree; however, the lantern was positioned above the tree canopy; thus, its output would not have been compromised.

The final column was of a different style to the rest of the installations along Chain Lane. Despite this, a Z9554M was still fitted.

This lantern operated without a bowl for a while in the early 2000s. A replacement was duly fitted - it was much cleaner back then that it was when these photographs were taken!
