Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract

Dower Close, Darley Abbey

The equipment being removed consisted of the following items in 1997:

Seq. No. Lamp Number Location Lamp Type Watt Isolation Point
1 26956 ADJ NO 8 OLD LN SXPL2 35
2 26957 OS NOS 9/10 SXPL2 35
3 82263 FP ADJ NOS 8-12 SXPL2 35

The following photographs were taken on Sunday, 11th March 2012.

First from Old Lane was a "PFI Specification" column supporting an SGS 252 ("Small") Iridium. This column was installed after August 2008, but this wasn't as part of a replacement scheme; instead, it replaced a life-expired Stanton 10 concrete column.

The successor to the Iridium column was situated on the opposite side of the road. A 6 m tubular steel column supporting a Metcraft 'Victoria' 45 Watt CPO-TW lantern was used.

The second outgoing column on the road was identical to how the first concrete column would have looked when still installed.

By 2012, concrete columns were more or less extinct on public roads in Derby; unsleeved columns being particularly rare. This veteran installation supported a top-entry Thorn Beta 5 35 Watt SOX lantern.

A nearby mid-hinged column supporting a newer side-entry Beta 5 was also planned for replacement as part of this scheme. Its replacement was also mid-hinged due to a lack of access for platform vehicles. I have no idea as to what purpose the cable attached to the outgoing column's shaft served.

A close-up of the Beta 5 reveals that, not only is there damage to its bowl, but the lantern was also running a very worn GE lamp. Given that GE ceased production of SOX lamps at the end of 2007 (bringing about the closure of the company's Leicester factory in the process), this lamp has done remarkably well.
