The following photographs were taken on Friday, 24th December 2010.
The new column installed in the turning head at the end of the road was directly below high voltage overhead electricity cables; therefore, it was base-hinged, in order to allow maintenance on the lantern to be undertaken from ground level.
The nearby outgoing column, supporting a Philips MI 26 35 Watt SOX lantern, was not directly below the lines, but was probably close enough for a hinged column to be installed here as well; however, the column was just a standard 5 m tubular steel.
The next outgoing column supported a Thorn Beta 5 lantern; the new column being installed opposite.
This close-up of the Beta 5 reveals that the lantern was fitted in April 2003 - evidenced by the date being written on the canopy.
An older MI 26 was installed on the next column. In the winter sunlight, the rusting bracket was very obvious.
The new lanterns were not yet operational at the time of photographing, as proven by the frost that had gathered on this Iridium's canopy and bowl.
It's amazing how the outgoing columns can move from one side of the new column to the other without being asked!
