Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract

Ladybank Road, Mickleover - Page Two

This WRTL Arc lantern (fitted with a 100 Watt SON-T lamp!) was installed in about 2006. The previous column here was knocked over by a wayward vehicle. Incidentally, the replacement Iridium here was the first on the estate to start dayburning.

Above: another MI 36 for the chop.

Here we have the 'Street Furniture Police Line-up'; the crime is that one of these items is suspected of killing off large amounts SOX lighting in Derby...from left-to-right, the list of suspects are a 'Star-Trak' pole, a bus shelter, a mobile telephone mast, a pillar box, a telephone kiosk, a telephone exchange cabinet, a new lighting column sporting a Philips Iridium, a pile of safety barriers and another utility cabinet. I believe that the lighting column is probably the guilty party here; possibly assisted by the safety barriers...

Moving up the hill, with Kingsmuir Road visible on the right, the 'suspects' are seen again.

This 8 m column supporting a Thorn Alpha 4 lantern replaced another 6 m column in around 2004 - even back then, the combination of 6 m columns and 55 Watt SOX lanterns must have been considered insufficient for lighting this road.

Above, this 1970s' column supporting a GEC Z9538 is unique on Ladybank Road - there were no other columns of this type installed on the road, and no other columns supported Z9538s. I can therefore only assume that this column was another early replacement for a damaged Abacus column.

This outgoing Abacus column (supporting a Philips MI 36 lantern) had been disconnected by Sunday, 28th March 2010. The column's door can be seen discarded in the hole by the cable entry slot.

The column on the left of this picture (opposite Barnwood Close) suffered with 'door-lock failure' in late 2004. This was remedied by having a length of insulation tape fastened around the door, though the lock was later repaired properly. The imprint made by the tape on the paintwork was still visible, however.
