Photographs taken at various dates between March and April 2010.
Looking down Ladybank Road from the Woodlands Island...the Thorn Alpha 4 lantern in the foreground replaced an Alpha 1 in approximately 2002/3. A busybody local street lighting collector was to blame for this lantern's demise - he noticed that the lantern had turned on its bracket after some blustery weather, reported it to the Council, and a few days later, the Alpha 1 was no more. Happily, a single (previously photographed) Alpha 1 remained until the end. These photographs were taken on Friday, 5th March 2010.
This night photograph shows the veteran Alpha 1 on the 5th March 2010.
A similar view here, except that the old lighting is now disconnected and awaiting removal, and the reign of CosmoWhite lighting along Ladybank Road has commenced. This photograph was taken on the evening of Thursday, 8th April 2010. In the end, the columns supporting the Alpha 4 and Alpha 1 were some of the last to be disconnected along the road. At some point during the afternoon of the 8th, the entire Alpha 4 and Alpha 1's Opticell were removed. The columns were then removed the following day.
More views of the Alpha 1:
This photograph was taken during the morning of Thursday, 8th April - the Opticell was still fitted at this point:
I cannot remember why this column supporting another Alpha 4 was installed; presumably the original 6 m column was found to be in a poor structural condition, either as a result of it being hit by a vehicle or possibly due to corrosion at base level.
Just visible around the base of the outgoing Abacus column in the foreground is a stainless steel "Tespa" / "Tamtorque" band - the door on this column was seen to be on the floor below, again in about 2002. By 2010, a high percentage of the locks had failed on the column doors throughout Ladybank Road, though when you consider that these columns must have been the best part of forty years old at this time, this is not surprising.
The next batch of photographs were taken on Sunday, 14th March 2010:
At the Station Road end of Ladybank Road, the situation is the same. By the time that these photographs had been taken, lanterns had been fitted to the new columns. The outgoing column in the foreground supported a 1990s' Philips MI 36, which would have replaced a Beta 7. The columns at this end of the road were made by the Stewart and Lloyd company, rather than by Abacus, though the brackets were almost identical for both column types. Many of these columns also featured banded-on inspection doors. A Beta 2 dating from the 1980s can be seen fitted to the second outgoing column - this may have been an early replacement for a failed Beta 7. The tall galvanised pole to the left of the picture is a telecommunications mast; one of many installed in Mickleover since the mid-2000s and the boom in mobile telephone usage.
This Beta 5 (and another further along the footpath) and Fabrikat 5 m raise-and-lower column was installed in the early 2000s. As such, it carries a maintenance number with a 'DY' prefix and is not shown on the above inventory list.
Moving away from Station Road in a westerly direction, the first significant bend in the road is seen. Rothwell Road is on the left.
Travelling around the bend, more MI 36s on Stewart and Lloyd columns are seen. Notice that this location is a designated bus stop; back in (about) 1996, I used to catch the school bus from this location. I *think* that the MI 36 had been installed by then.
Another 1980s' Beta 2 could be seen around the next corner. The column was newer than surrounding installations, and probably replaced a damaged Stewart and Lloyd unit at some point in that decade. In the early 2000s, the Beta 2 dayburned for a while; the two-part photocell having failed.
