The following photographs were taken on Monday, 7th May 2018.
Thanks to the majority of the above columns supporting 35 Watt SOX lanterns being replaced with new 6 m columns supporting Thorn Beta 2 55 Watt SOX lanterns after the above list was produced, the lighting stock along this road was considered too new to warrant replacement under the main PFI work. Amazingly, a much older 8 m column in the section (30049) supporting a Thorn Alpha 1 90 Watt SOX lantern not only managed to escape replacement for this reason, but was repainted into the standard dark blue of all columns installed as part of the PFI in 2018.
The installation is typical of how Derby's Alpha 1s were installed, with the photocell mounted remotely from the lantern, on top of the bracket, in order to simplify the wiring along the length of the bracket outreach. The photocell is a Royce Thompson SC1000/SAV 35 Lux photocell, employed on many Derby installations from 2010 onwards.
The lantern's supposedly-sealed 'Opticell' unit shows signs of dirt and water ingress.
The fresh coat of paint has done much to make the base of the Stewart & Lloyd column appear far newer than it actually is.
A crack is visible at the front of the lantern, which may be the reason for the Opticell no longer being sealed. The sunlight also reveals painted-over rust patches along the length of the bracket.
